Two Kinds of Process or Two Kinds of Processing? Disambiguating Dual-Process Theories

چکیده

Abstract Dual-Process Theories (D-PTs) claim there are two qualitatively different types of processes in the human brain-mind. Despite forming basis for several areas cognitive science, they still shrouded ambiguity: critics erroneously attack D-PTs as a whole (e.g., Evans and Stanovich Perspectives on Psychological Science , 8(3), 2013), qualitative/quantitative distinction is not clear enough (De Neys 16 (6): 1412–1427, 2021; Dewey 2022) and, given this criterion, deciding between qualitative or quantitative differences may even be scientifically irrelevant 2021). As way disambiguating discussion clarifying what exactly means to existence second type process, I define possible categories D-PT: The substantial instrumental. In case, Type 2 subpersonal level ones. instrumental processing personal phenomenon that does necessarily imply processes. Discussing implications each categories, use main example illustrate ambiguity – exercise disambiguation model proposed by (2013), making its character, contrast it with Frankish’ (2009) case D-PT. Finally, discuss contributions can make. By clearer, provide relatively unanimous framework dual- single-process theorists (the version) clearer desiderata those wishing defend substantive one.

Two Kinds of Universals and two Kinds of Groups

Philosophers have long debated about two ways of conceiving of universals: as Platonic universals and as Aristotelian universals. Roughly, Aristotelian universals are inherent in the particulars that instantiate them; they can be multiply located (located just where the instances are located), and they exist only if they have at least one instance. Platonic universals, by contrast, are truly ab...

Two kinds of reasoning.

According to one view of reasoning, people can evaluate arguments in at least two qualitatively different ways: in terms of their deductive correctness and in terms of their inductive strength. According to a second view, assessments of both correctness and strength are a function of an argument's position on a single psychological continuum (e.g., subjective conditional probability). A deducti...

Two Kinds of Electron?

In the 1930s physicists were confronted by two conflicting values for the charge of the electron as measured with great precision by two different methods. Could it be that there are two kinds of (negative) electrons, differing in charge by a fraction of a percent? The experiments were reconciled when a small systematic error in one of the experiments was identified and taken into account using...

Two Kinds of Metonymy

We propose a distinction between two kinds of metonymy: "referential" metonymy, in which the referent of an NP is shifted, and "predicative" metonymy, in which the referent of the NP is unchanged and the argument place of the predicate is shifted instead. Examples are, respectively, "The hamburger is waiting for his check" and "Which airlines fly from Boston to Denver". We also show that compli...
